0801 United Airlines flight 93 (Boeing 757 with 11,300 gallons of fuel) pushed back from the gate in Newark International Airport with 45 people aboard bound for San Francisco. They are 1 minute behind schedule but will sit on the ground for 40 minutes before taking off.
0813 Flight 11 gets instructions to turn 20 degrees to the right. Boston Control Center: "AAL11 turn 20 degrees right." Flight 11 responds: "20 right AAL11." [Moments later] Controller: "AAL11 now climb maintain FL350 [35,000 feet]." Controller: "AAL11 climb maintain FL350." Controller: "AAL11 Boston." There is no reply from Flight 11.
0814 United Airlines flight 175 (Boeing 767) takes off from Boston's Logan International Airport with 65 people aboard for Los Angeles.
0820 Flight 11 stops transmitting IFF beacon signal while over the Hudson River.
0820 American Airlines flight 77 (Boeing 757) departs Washington Dulles Airport near Washington with 64 people aboard for Los Angeles.
0824 Flight 11 broadcasts "We have some planes. Just stay quiet and you will be OK. We are returning to the airport. Nobody move." Apparently, one of the hijackers confused the aircraft's radio with its public-address system. Air traffic control responds "Who's trying to call me?" Then from Flight 11, "Everything will be OK. If you try to make any moves, you'll endanger yourself and the airplane. Just stay quiet."
0825 Boston Air Traffic Control notified several air traffic control centers that hijack is in progress.
0827 Flight 11 takes a sudden turn south, veering away from Albany towards New York City.
0827 Betty Ong, a flight attendant on Flight 11, calls American Airlines reservations from the seatback phone. "She said two flight attendants had been stabbed, one was on oxygen," said the the manager on duty. "A passenger had his throat slashed and looked dead and they had gotten into the cockpit." She identifies the seats of the hijackers and confirms that the plane is descending.
0830 Bush's motorcade left for the school
0833 Another transmission Flight 11, "Nobody move please. We are going back to the airport. Don't try to make any stupid moves."
0837 Flight 175 receives an unusual call asking them to locate Flight 11. The pilot responds, "Affirmative, we have him, uh, he looks, uh, about 20, yeah, about 29, 28,000 [feet]." Controllers tell 175 to make a right turn to avoid Flight 11.
0838 Boston air traffic center notifies NORAD that Flight 11 has been hijacked.
0841 Flight 175 transmits "We heard a suspicious transmission on our departure from B-O-S. "Sounds like someone keyed the mike and said, `Everyone, stay in your seats.'"
0842 Around this time Flight 175 is hijacked. It veers from it's course over New Jersey briefly continuing south before making a U-turn to the north, for New York City.
0842 Flight 93 finally takes off from Newark International Airport for San Francisco.
0843 FAA notifies NORAD that Flight 175 has been hijacked.
0844 Otis Air National Guard Base in Massachusetts orders two fighters scrambled.
0845 Flight 11 strikes the World Trade Center's north tower at about the 80th floor.

0846

President Bush was at an event at a Florida school on Sept. 11, when senior adviser Karl Rove told him at 8:46 a.m. that a plane had hit the north tower of the World Trade Center. "This is a pilot error," the president recalled saying.
0846 Flight 175 stops transmitting IFF beacon signal.
0847 the Secret Service knew a hijacked plane had crashed into the World Trade Center.
0847 NORAD informed of the plane striking the World Trade Center.
0850 United systems operations center receives word that a flight attendant from Flight 175 had called and said "Oh my God. The crew has been killed, a flight attendant has been stabbed. We've been hijacked." Then the line went dead.
0852 Two F-15 Eagles take off from Otis in effort to intercept hijacked plane(s) after first plane has struck the World Trade Center.
0856 Flight 77's transponder is shut off which reduced the ground's ability to track the aircraft's position. Air traffic control repeatedly calls "American 77 indy radio check, how do you read?"
0900 Around this time, United Airlines systems operations transmits a systemwide message, warning its pilots of a potential "cockpit intrusion". Flight 93, flying over western PA and into northern OH, replies "Confirmed".
0900 Last radar reading on Flight 175 is observed at an altitude of 18,000 feet, descending, with a ground speed of 480 knots.
0900 Flight 77 is seen making a 180 turn and heading back to Washington.

0902

Flight 175 - 2nd jet - strikes the World Trade Center's south tower at about the 60th floor. F-15 fighter jets from Otis are still 70 miles away.

Investigate The Non-Evacuation of Booker Elementary School

May 6, 2002

Dear Senator Akaka,

I would like to see an investigation into why the Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida was not evacuated on the morning of September 11, 2001. Why were those children and the President exposed to an unprecedented threat yet nothing was done?

ABC journalist John Cochran was traveling with the President. He reported on ABC TV on Tuesday morning (Sept 11th):

"Peter, as you know, the president's down in Florida talking about
education. He got out of his hotel suite this morning, was about to leave, reporters saw the White House chief of staff, Andy Card, whisper into his ear. The reporter said to the president, 'Do you know what's going on in New York?' He said he did, and he said he will have something about it later. His first event is about half an hour at an elementary school in Sarasota, Florida." Quoted from ABC transcripts available at their web site.

Clearly President Bush and the Secret Service are aware that the first plane had hit the WTC, however it was reported that they believed that it was a small plane and proceeded to the Booker School.

Mr. Card came into the classroom at 9:05 to inform President Bush that
"America is under attack" because a second plane had struck the WTC.

President Bush looked solemn for a minute then - amazingly - continued on with the discussion about pet goats with the students.

This was widely reported, however a search on Associated Press for Sonya Ross will turn up a relevant document as she was covering the President that morning.

I specifically want to know why the Secret Service did not immediately secure the President and remove him from danger and why the school was not evacuated thereby putting hundreds of children into harm's way. At the time of the second plane crashed into the WTC there was no way of knowing how many other planes or incidents were involved. There could have been none, a few or even hundreds more involved - there simply was no way of knowing. The president's visit to that school was a widely publicized event. That school was a potential target.

It was a gross dereliction of their sworn duty for the Secret Service to not remove the President from the school at 9:05. I don't even know what to call the threat to those hundreds of children. I would like to know when these Secret Service personnel will be reprimanded.

One can certainly argue now that the President and the children were safe because nothing happened, but at that time, at 9:05 AM on September 11th there was no way of knowing. I really want to know why the school was not evacuated. It has always been my understanding that the Secret Service's sole responsibility is to protect the President - giving their own lives, if necessary, to protect him. What happened on September 11th? Why did they not lift a finger to get him out of that school?

Why were those children left in harm's way?

Ari Fleischer, Bush's press secretary clearly stated on September 12th that Air Force One was in fact a target. This was later disproved, however the country was lead to believe that the President was a target on September 11th. I want to know why the Secret Service did not protect the President or the children of Emma E. Booker Elementary School.

Thank you for your prompt attention into this matter.

The obscure goat story of 9-11

It is very important to examine the first reactions President Bush had concerning the events of September 11.  You can tell much about the truth by observing the reactions of men. Human nature is almost always the best truth detector and said to be the most accurate lie detector. One of the basic instructions taught to every U.S. military and civilian police trainee is to "watch and observe".  Let's observe what really took place before these headline stories are buried in a sea of obscurity.

"In Sarasota, Florida, Bush was reading to children in a classroom at 9:05 a.m. when his chief of staff, Andrew Card, whispered into his ear. The president briefly turned somber before he resumed reading. He addressed the tragedy about a half-hour later. " - Associated Press, September 12, 2001 [bold emphasis added].

"President Bush listened to 18 Booker Elementary School second-graders read a story about a girl's pet goat Tuesday before he spoke briefly and somberly about the terrorist attacks." - Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Page A20, September 12, 2001  [bold emphasis added].

President Bush became briefly somber and continued reading a story about a goat for nearly another half hour. He didn't politely excuse himself to the children, but rather, temporarily stopped reading only to continue on as if nothing had happened.  Is this how you - or anyone around you at the time - reacted when you first heard the news of the WTC tragedy?  At the very least, one would think that Bush would have spent a minute or two being properly briefed by his trusted Chief of Staff before finishing his reading of a goat story. If this was new news to him, one would surely think that he would immediately want to know more details. Does anyone else see that this "Presidential" reaction was out of place and doesn't fit the circumstances?  His reaction seems to imply that this was not fresh news to him, but more of a confirmation of what he might have already known about. Watch and observe.

In human nature, this kind of reaction - in reality, a non-reaction - usually comes about when the hearer either already has knowledge of what he was just told, or he doesn't have any concern over what he was just told.  Some have already said that Bush didn't want to upset the children as an excuse for his continuing to read the goat story.  Wouldn't one have to believe that these 7 year old children were already upset and nervous about having the President read a story with them in their classroom?   A simple and polite "Children, I'm sorry I can't read with you any longer. As the President, sometimes my schedule changes quickly, but I want to thank you for allowing me to join you in reading this story" would have been fitting.  The problem is that's not what happened.  Watch and observe.

It struck us odd that both the above newspaper articles (as well as many others) stressed the word somber in describing the President's first as well as delayed reactions.  That seemed normal enough at first, but then we decided to find out what a somber reaction and manner of speech really is. Watch and observe.

Now it appears that the somber reaction of President Bush is perhaps more revealing than at first glimpse.  If the President "briefly turned somber" and "spoke briefly and somberly about the terrorist attacks," then the reporters were describing both his demeanor and speech as being shadowy, obscure, dark,   unreal, without light, and suspicious.  Was this a mistaken word of description, or were they accurately reporting what they saw and observed?

These newspaper reports are describing the character and demeanor of the President as dark, black, and lightless when Andrew Card told him about the WTC disaster. They did not describe him as becoming sorrowful or concerned, nor even that he appeared upset. They deliberately chose the word somber to relay to their readers how President Bush appeared. Watch and observe.

The reporters also used the same word somber to describe his manner of speech after having had 30 minutes to (perhaps) compose himself from such tragic news.   His manner of speech, nearly a half hour later, was  portrayed with the same descriptions of obscurity, being void of light, suspicious, unrealistic, and shadowy. This is not the depiction of a man who is upset, worried, or concerned about a grave tragedy. Watch and observe.

When one learns of tragic news at the first hearing, his reaction is always described with characteristic words such as shocked, dismayed, worried, awe, sadness, or upset.  This describes how all of us reacted when we first heard the news of the WTC disaster... that is, all of us except President Bush, according to the reporters who were watching and observing him.

When one hears of tragic news after he was told it would - or most likely would - take place, his reaction is described with characteristic words such as disappointed, angry, remorseful, or somber. Watch and observe.

Either the Sarasota, Florida newspaper and AP reporters were both wrong in choosing the word somber, or the President just may have been showing us that he knew what was to happen before he read the goat story to a class of 7 year old children.   Either way, be it irresponsible reporting or an irresponsible President, this is a tragedy in and of itself.  However, it's hard to believe that two or more witnesses separately chose the character word somber by mistake.

The worst thing we can do is to react to the events of September 11 without watching and observing first, as this is our first defense against possible deception.  Human reactions are great lie detectors simply for the fact that they are very difficult to hide.  The lies that may surround the WTC disaster must be exposed.   Truth appears to have already been the first casualty before any airplane was hijacked.

That’s two sets of proofs that question the famous whisper-in-the-ear at 9:05. Still not convinced? How about the typically garbled words of the President himself? From the transcript of a Town Hall session in Orlando, Florida on December 4th:

JORDAN (a third grader): “…how did you feel when you heard about the terrorist attack?” [applause]

THE PRESIDENT: “Thank you, Jordan. Well, Jordan…I was sitting outside the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower -- the TV was obviously on. And I used to fly, myself, and I said, well, there's one terrible pilot…. But I was whisked off there, I didn't have much time to think about it. And I was sitting in the classroom, and Andy Card, my Chief of Staff…walked in and said, ‘A second plane has hit the tower, America is under attack.’ And, Jordan, I wasn't sure what to think at first.”

Wait a minute! The president tells us he saw the incredible image of the first plane going in. He went ahead with an easily-cancellable appointment. Why? He tells us he knew his country was under attack, yet he continued to listen to a student talk about her pet goat, and such, for another 25 minutes. Why?

"The Great Deception"

Part 1 of a multi-part series (Part 2 airs Jan 28)

Transcript of Mon., Jan. 21 2002 Broadcast

What really happened on Sept. 11 th ? "9/11 -- Part 1."

For four months I’ve been waiting in vain for the North American media to pursue questions about

the startling events of September 11 th . Here’s what I want to know:

The multiple hijackings are unprecedented. The first occurs at 7:45 in the morning. It’s a full hour

before the first plane hits the World Trade Center. But it’s an hour and 20 minutes -- and after the

second plane hits – that the President allegedly becomes informed. Think about that.

Then, he gives no orders. Why? He continues to listen to a student talk about her pet goat. Why?

It’s another 25 minutes until he makes a statement, even as flight 77 is making a bee-line for

Washington, DC.

In the almost two hours of the total drama not a single U.S. Air Force interceptor turns a wheel

until it’s too late. Why? Was it total incompetence on the part of aircrews trained and equipped to

scramble in minutes?

On 9-11 President Bush was in Sarasota, Florida on the second
day of a two-day tour. Bush's plans for that day were publicly
known in advance.
(2)

Many people are confused concerning what President Bush knew and
when he knew it that morning.

The reason for this confusion is that, later on, Ari Fleischer,
Bush's press secretary, Richard Cheney, his Vice President and
President Bush himself issued contradictory accounts of what
Bush did that morning.

Fortunately, newspaper and TV people were with President Bush in
Florida on September 11. Their eyewitness reports paint a clear
picture.

In this section of the Summary of Evidence, we will:

* a) establish what Bush and his staff knew prior to his
entering the classroom at the Booker School and

* b) consider some implications.

In future sections we will examine Bush's actual visit to the
Booker School and his departure from Sarasota-Bradenton
International Airport in Florida later that morning. We will
also examine the cover stories floated, later on, by Fleischer,
Cheney and by President Bush himself.

BUSH KNEW ABOUT THE FIRST CRASH BEFORE ENTERING BOOKER SCHOOL

Associated Press reporter Sonya Ross was one of the journalists covering Bush's trip to Florida on the morning of 9-11. Ms. Ross was either on her way to the Booker School or already there when she learned of the first WTC crash:

"My cell phone rang as President Bush's motorcade coursed toward Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Fla. A colleague reported that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center inNew York. No further information.

"I called the AP desk in Washington, seeking details. Same scant
information. But I knew it had to be grim. I searched for a
White House official to question, but none was on hand until
9:05 a.m. " AP 12 September (3)

Ms. Ross 'searched for a White House official' because she knew
Bush's people would be better informed than the Associated
Press.

BUSH TRAVELS WITH A POWERFUL STAFF

President Bush is not an ordinary person. He travels with an
entire staff. They are responsible for receiving, filtering and
conveying administrative and military information. Chief of
Staff Andrew Card organizes and coordinates these staff members
and communicates with the President. In addition, Bush has the
Secret Service, which is responsible for his safety.

The members of this support team have the best communications
equipment in the world. They maintain contact with, or can
easily reach, Bush's cabinet, the National Military Command
Center (NMCC) in the Pentagon, the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA), and Secret Service agents who have stayed
behind at the White House, etc.

Since Ms. Ross heard about the first WTC crash while the Bush motorcade was speeding to the Booker School, common sense dictates that Mr. Bush knew earlier and knew more.

ABC journalist John Cochran was traveling with the President. He
reported on this very matter on ABC TV on Tuesday morning:

"Peter, as you know, the president's down in Florida talking
about education. He got out of his hotel suite this morning, was
about to leave, reporters saw the White House chief of staff,
Andy Card, whisper into his ear.

The reporter said to the president, 'Do you know what's going on in New York?' He said he did, and he said he will have something about it later.

His first event is about half an hour at an elementary school in Sarasota, Florida."

'ABC News' Special Report (4)

So Bush knew about the first WTC incident before leaving his
hotel.

What else did he know?

1) John Cochran reports that President Bush did not respond to
Andrew Card. It is inconceivable that a living person could be
told that a plane had just ploughed into the biggest building in
New York and have no response. So Bush must have known before
Card whispered in his ear.

2) This is confirmed by the fact that shortly after Card spoke
to him, Bush told a reporter that he would make a statement
later. Bush would not have said that without discussing the
situation with his Chief of Staff and others.

DID BUSH KNOW THE WTC CRASH WAS A TERRORIST ATTACK?

This question is answered by something Vice President Richard
Cheney revealed, probably unwittingly, on MEET THE PRESS,
Sunday, September 16th.

Even without John Cochran's report on ABC, Cheney's comments
constitute evidence that before President Bush went to the
Booker School he knew a plane had been hijacked and then crashed
into the WTC.

Cheney was talking with MEET THE PRESS journalist Tim Russert
about the flight path of American Flight 77, which struck the
Pentagon. Here's the exchange:

"VICE PRES. CHENEY: ...As best we can tell, they [American
Flight 77] came initially at the White House and...

"MR. RUSSERT: The plane actually circled the White House?

"VICE PRES. CHENEY: Didn't circle it, but was headed on a track
into it. The Secret Service has an arrangement with the F.A.A.
They had open lines after the World Trade Center was... "

"MR. RUSSERT: Tracking it by radar.

"VICE PRES. CHENEY: And when it entered the danger zone and
looked like it was headed for the White House was when they
grabbed me and evacuated me to the basement... (Etc.)" MEET THE
PRESS Transcript (5)

It appears that Cheney may have blurted out the crucial fact
that the Secret Service had an open line to the FAA, then
realized he was talking too much and stopped before completing
his sentence. But if he did indeed talk too much, he also
stopped talking too late. It is obvious that the sentence should
have ended with the word 'hit' or something similar. Thus:

"The Secret Service has an arrangement with the F.A.A. They had
open lines after the World Trade Center was hit."

The Secret Service had a special connection with the FAA so that
it could rapidly access information relevant to the President's
safety. After the first WTC attack, the connection between the
FAA and the Secret Service was elevated to the level of open
lines.

In a similar fashion, orders issued by the FAA and the Joint Chiefs of Staff require heightened contact between the FAA and the National Military Command Center (NMCC) during hijackings.

Therefore, by the time American Flight 11 crashed into the World
Trade Center, around 8:46, and most likely before that happened,
the Secret Service knew what the FAA knew.

So, what did the FAA know?

The FAA admits that at 8:20 it 'suspected' that American Flight
11 had been hijacked. (7) And according to the official story
released Sept. 14th:

"8:40 [the] FAA notifie[s] NEADS (the Northeast Air Defense
Sector) of NORAD, the military's civil defense system, about
Flight 11, [i.e., that it had been hijacked.]" Newsday 23
September 2001 (7)

Therefore, based on the official story, the Secret Service knew
by 8:40 or before that Flight 11 had been hijacked. And since
the FAA was tracking Flight 11, as was the National Military
Command Center, which is notified of hijackings and has access
to radar from all over the country, (8) it is definite that at
8:46 the Secret Service knew a hijacked plane had crashed into
the World Trade Center.

So according to the official story, before the President entered
the Booker School, indeed, apparently before he left his hotel,
the Secret Service knew that, for the first time in US history,
the country had been attacked by terrorists from the air.

The job of the Secret Service is to protect the President and
Vice President. Here's how Richard Cheney described the response
of Secret Service agents when they thought he might be in
danger:

"...under these circumstances, they just move. They don't say
"sir" or ask politely. They came in and said, "Sir, we have to
leave immediately," and grabbed me and...

"MR. RUSSERT: Literally grabbed you and moved you?

"VICE PRES. CHENEY: Yeah. And, you know, your feet touch the
floor periodically. But they're bigger than I am, and they
hoisted me up and moved me very rapidly down the hallway, down
some stairs, through some doors and down some more stairs into
an underground facility under the White House, and, as a matter
of fact, it's a corridor, locked at both ends..."

NBC MEET THE PRESS 16 September 2001 (9)

Here is what we can state with certainty:

1) Before President Bush left his hotel, the Secret Service knew
a hijacked plane had ploughed into the World Trade Center, a
building that symbolized US power.

2) The President is the most obvious individual target for a
terrorist attack.

3) The President was scheduled to visit the Booker School that
morning. The visit was of no importance - that is, he could
easily cancel it. His schedule was publicly known, down to the
time he would give a talk at the school - 9:30. (10)

4) Assuming the official story was entirely true, there was
every reason to believe that a terrorist had flown a plane into
the WTC. Therefore, of course, a terrorist might fly a plane
into the Booker School to kill Bush - arguably a bigger victory
than ramming the WTC. And if the WTC attack signaled the start
of a broader terrorist attack, it was certainly possible that
heavily armed terrorists would attack the Booker School on the
ground.

HERE IS THE BURNING QUESTION:

Given the Secret Service's obligation to protect the President;

Given the Secret Service's open line to the FAA and therefore
its knowledge that a plane had been hijacked and subsequently
ploughed into the World Trade Center;

Given the potentially deadly threat to President Bush if he
proceeded to a public place, on schedule, as announced the day
before and known to everyone in the region;

There is only one explanation for the Secret Service allowing
President Bush to take the deadly risk of going to the Booker
School on the morning of September 11th.

George Walker Bush knew the plans for 9-11. And because he knew
those plans, he knew that nobody was going to attack the Booker
School.

"In Sarasota, Fla., Bush was reading to children in a classroom at 9:05 a.m. when his chief of staff,
Andrew Card, whispered into his ear. The president briefly turned somber before he resumed reading.
He addressed the tragedy about a half-hour later. " ['AP' Sept 12, 2001, our emphasis]

"President Bush listened to 18 Booker Elementary School second-graders read a story about a girl's pet goat
Tuesday before he spoke briefly and somberly about the terrorist attacks." -- Sarasota Herald-Tribune,

Booker [Emperor's Clothes note: The school was Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Fla.]

But instead of going into an emergency meeting, he continued his visit to an elementary school, hearing about [a children's story about] goats.

Word of the tragedy first came to President Bush in the hallway of a school in Sarasota, Fla.,
moments after the first plane hit New York's World Trade Center. He went to a private room,
where he spoke by phone with National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice; it appeared then
that the matter could be just a terrible accident.

Then, at 9:04 a.m., while Bush met with second-graders, staff chief Andrew H. Card Jr.
whispered in his ear that a second plane had struck. Bush's sunny countenance went grim.
After Card's whisper, Bush looked distracted and somber but continued to listen to the
second-graders read and soon was smiling again. He joked that they read so well, they
must be sixth-graders.

After huddling with advisers, Bush entered the school's media center for what was to have
been an education speech. He looked stunned, but by the time he reached the podium, he
was composed and at 9:30 a.m. delivered the chilling news of "an apparent terrorist attack
on our country."

Following is the transcript of President Bush's speech on today's plane crashes. Bush was speaking from Sarasota, Fla.

BUSH: Ladies and gentlemen, this is a difficult moment for America. I unfortunately will be going back to Washington after my remarks. Secretary Rod Paige and the lieutenant governor will take the podium and discuss education.

I do want to thank the folks here at the Booker Elementary School for their hospitality.

Today we've had a national tragedy. Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country. I have spoken to the vice president, to the governor of New York, to the director of the FBI, and I've ordered that the full resources of the federal government go to help the victims and their families and to conduct a full-scale investigation to hunt down and to find those folks who committed this act.

Terrorism against our nation will not stand.

And now if you join me in a moment of silence.

May God bless the victims, their families and America. Thank you very much.

Bush faces first major national crisis

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Facing the first major national crisis of his administration, President Bush this morning condemned the "apparent terrorist attack" on the World Trade Center and ordered that the "full resources of the federal government" be deployed to "hunt down" the perpetrators.

"Terrorism against our nation will not stand," Bush said in a brief and somber speech at an elementary school in Sarasota, Fla. He cut short his two-day trip after hearing that the World Trade Center had been hit by what were apparently hijacked planes. At the time he left, he didn't yet know about the crash at the Pentagon.

Bush flew immediately to an undisclosed location. He was expected to consult with top advisers, who already had begun outlining backup plans that go by the grim name of "continuity of government."

At first, Bush had planned to hold the meeting in the White House. But the White House was evacuated after the Secret Service received credible threats this morning of a terrorist act against the presidential mansion and residence.

A senior administration official said Bush's aides were anxious for him to return to the White House as quickly as possible, both because it is the best place to monitor events and because of the message of stability it would send. It was unclear how quickly that would be possible.

Looking drawn and speaking slowly, Bush made his brief remarks in an incongruous atmosphere, surrounded by dozens of schoolchildren at Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Fla., where he was scheduled to read to the children before giving a speech on his education policy later in the day.

Speaking at the school, Bush looked stern and businesslike. He folded his hands. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is a difficult moment for America," Bush said, reading from handwritten notes. "I, unfortunately, will be going back to Washington after my remarks. Secretary Rod Paige and the lieutenant governor will take the podium and discuss education," he said, referring to the education secretary.

"I do want to thank the folks here at Booker Elementary School for their hospitality," he said, before explaining what had happened.

Bush's speech  8:30 p.m.

Sept. 11 Four planes get hijacked and deviate from their flight plans, all the while on FAA radar. The planes are all hijacked between
7:45 and 8:10 AM Eastern Daylight Time.

                 Who is notified?

This is an event already that is unprecedented. But the President is not notified and going to a Florida elementary school to
                 hear children read.

By around 8:15 AM, it should be very apparent that something is terribly wrong. The President is glad-handing teachers.

By 8:45, when American Airlines Flight 11 crashes into the World Trade Center, Bush is settling in with children for his
photo ops at Booker Elementary. Four planes have obviously been hijacked simultaneously, an event never before seen in
history, and one has just dived into the worlds best know twin towers, and still no one notifies the nominal Commander
                 in Chief.

No one has apparently scrambled any Air Force interceptors either.

At 9:03, United Flight 175 crashes into the remaining World Trade Center building.

At 9:05, Andrew Card, the Presidential Chief of Staff whispers to George W. Bush. Bush "briefly turns somber"according to reporters.

Does he cancel the school visit and convene an emergency meeting? No.

He resumes listening to second graders read about a little girl's pet goat, and continues this banality even as American
Airlines Flight 77conducts an unscheduled point turn over Ohio and heads in the direction of Washington DC.

Has he instructed Chief of Staff Card to scramble the Air Force? No.

An excruciating 25 minutes later, he finally deigns to give a public statement telling the United States what they already
have figured out; that there's been an attack by hijacked planes on the World Trade Center.

There's a hijacked plane bee-lining to Washington, but has the Air Force been scrambled to defend anything yet? No.

At 9:30, when he makes his announcement, American Flight 77 is still ten minutes from its target, the Pentagon.

The Administration will later claim they had no way of knowing that the Pentagon might be a target, and that they thought
Flight 77 was headed to the White House, but the fact is that the plane has already flown south and past the White House
no-fly zone, and is in fact tearing through the sky at over 400 nauts.

At 9:35, this plane conducts another turn, 360 degrees over the  Pentagon, all the while being tracked by radar, and the
Pentagon is not evacuated, and there are still no fast-movers from the Air Force in the sky over Alexandria and DC.

Now, the real kicker. A pilot they want us to believe was trained at a Florida puddle-jumper school for Piper Cubs and
Cessnas, conducts a well-controlled downward spiral, descending the last 7,000 feet in two-and-a-half minutes, brings the
plane in so low and flat that it clips the electrical wires across the street from the Pentagon, and flies it with pinpoint
accuracy into the side of this building at 460 nauts.

When the theory about learning to fly this well at the puddle-jumper school began to lose ground, it was added that they
received further training on a flight simulator.

"Today, we've had a national tragedy," he began.

"Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country. I have spoken to the vice president, to the governor of New York, to the director of the FBI, and I've ordered that the full resources of the federal government go to help the victims and their families and to conduct a full-scale investigation to hunt down and to find those folks who committed this act. Terrorism against our nation will not stand."

He paused.

"And now, if you'd join me in a moment of silence," he said. He bowed his head for a second or two.

"May God bless the victims, their families and America. Thank you very much," he said.

Bush's motorcade left for the school at 8:30 a.m. As it was arriving, pagers and cell phones alerted White House aides that a plane had hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Bush remembers senior adviser Karl Rove bringing him the news, saying it appeared to be an accident involving a small, twin-engine plane.

In fact it was American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767 out of Boston's Logan International Airport. Based on what he was told, Bush assumed it was an accident.

"This is pilot error," the president recalled saying. "It's unbelievable that somebody would do this." Conferring with Andrew H. Card Jr., his White House chief of staff, Bush said, "The guy must have had a heart attack."

That morning the president's key advisers were scattered. Cheney and Rice were at their offices in the West Wing. Rumsfeld was at his office in the Pentagon, meeting with a delegation from Capitol Hill. Powell had just sat down for breakfast with the new president of Peru, Alejandro Toledo, in Lima. Tenet was at breakfast with his old friend and mentor, former senator David Boren (D-Okla.), at the St. Regis Hotel, three blocks from the White House. Gen. Henry H. Shelton, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was halfway across the Atlantic on the way to Europe. Attorney General John D. Ashcroft was bound for Milwaukee. FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III, on the job for just a week, was in his office at FBI headquarters on Pennsylvania Avenue.

At 9:05 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175, also a Boeing 767, smashed into the South Tower of the trade center. Bush was seated on a stool in the classroom when Card whispered the news: "A second plane hit the second tower. America is under attack."

Bush remembers exactly what he thought: "They had declared war on us, and I made up my mind at that moment that we were going to war."

A photo shows Bush's face with a distant look as he absorbed what Card had said. He nodded and resumed his conversation with the class. "Really good," he said before excusing himself and returning to the holding room. "These must be sixth-graders
